December MOPs Update

Written by: Kristen Hunt, Mission of Hope staff

As the year draws to a close, our entire MOPs staff wants to say thank you for your generosity to the patients in the Medical Outreach Program and support of our team. Throughout the book of Psalms, we read about how God fights for his children, even when it seems the world may be against them, and it has been humbling to watch God fight for his beloved throughout this past year.

In 2018, the Lord has continued to provide and work miracles through MOPs:

  • Over 700 patients have been seen on weekly or monthly home visits
  • Five patients received life transformative surgeries including the removal of a retinoblastoma, a tumor of the eye
  • Four children who were malnourished are now healthy and stable

This year, we had the pleasure of meeting and working with a new patient, Keterly, a thirteen-year-old paraplegic. She had received occasional therapy when physical therapists were visiting Haiti through Mission of Hope, but recently a physical therapist in Haiti named Rachel began graciously donating her time and skills to MOPs and started working with Keterly regularly. One week ago, Keterly was able to stand for the first time in years! With support from Rachel and the team, she was standing! Rachel has also started working on strengthening Keterly’s fine motor skills such as drawing and coloring within the lines. Rachel’s skill set in physical therapy is a blessing and tremendous asset to the MOPs team. She has been able to assist in physical therapy for an infant with Down syndrome and another patient with Cerebral Palsy. Many families feel alone and helpless when their child has special needs, but through MOPs, they receive support and see, in a tangible way, how Jesus loves them dearly.

Psalm 18:30-32 says, “The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.”

We can trust that even when we fall short, God is still the shield and rock of each Medical Outreach Program patient, and it is He who protects and provides. Thank you again for giving and being part of MOPs and Mission of Hope. God continues to use your gifts and prayers to transform lives in Haiti.
