Haiti in Crisis | State of Emergency - March 2024

haiti in crisis

Today, 4.4M people in Haiti have no idea where their next meal will come from.

According to the United Nations, there are 310,000 people who are internally displaced from their homes; they fled in search of safety, effectively becoming exiles within their own country.

Let this sink in for a moment—nearly 5M people are fighting for their lives in Haiti as you read these words. Gang violence in the country has increased dramatically, spurred by political unrest which has escalated since 2018. Circumstances have now prompted potential intervention of the UN and placed Haiti on the precipice of further collapse. The fallout will cause generational damage, yet most Haitian families suffer in relative silence because much of the world is unaware of their dire situation.

This is more than a political crisis—it's a humanitarian crisis.

We must break the silence and respond, and, by God’s grace, Mission of Hope is positioned perfectly to do so. We are poised to fill the growing gap between needs and resources to care for the people we love. As an organization, we are:

  • Staying Focused—With unwavering faith and conviction, we continue to serve those to whom we are committed, including supporting schools and ensuring families have access to the basic necessities required to survive, such as food and clean water.
  • Searching for Creative Solutions—We are currently procuring locally produced meals to support the exiled families fleeing to the north specifically.
  • Scaling Distribution—We are working with international organizations and local partners to quickly scale up our food distribution to meet the expanding needs of exiled families.

God has prepared us over 25 years on the front lines in Haiti to provide the most effective, efficient, secure, and proven model of aid delivery available through our HaitiOne Network. Through earthquakes, hurricanes, and civil unrest, we have led the efforts for rescue, recovery, and rebuilding. Because of the changes that have taken place in the country, the hundreds of organizations that partnered with us over the years have dwindled, and many have departed because of rising danger. We, however, are resolute, equipped, and ready to lead the charge again—we just need your help now more than ever. Here’s how you can join us on the front lines:

  • Pray. First, and most importantly, join us in praying specifically for the safety of exiled families and for our team as they continue to risk their own lives to serve.
  • Give. Serving so many vulnerable people will be costly. If you feel compelled to join this expanding effort, you can do so here
  • Share. It is alarming how little the world knows about this expanding crisis. We need more loud voices sharing the plight of Haitian families and inviting others to serve them.

As we share the difficult reality of the devastation unfolding in Haiti, we are so grateful for your partnership and care for our friends and neighbors in Haiti. We will be sending updates throughout the coming days and weeks to keep you informed on our response and how you can continue to support our Haitian brothers and sisters. Your generosity and commitment to standing with the people of Haiti during times like these are what make our work possible. Together, we are making a significant difference, offering hope and tangible support to those who need it most.
