Haiti in Crisis | 1.4M Steps Away from Famine

haiti in crisis

Since our blog post on Monday, the UN released a report stating that 1.4 million people are a mere step away from famine in Haiti.

That is the highest level of food insecurity.

It’s become nearly impossible to move anything out of the ports. Shipping lines are pausing and redirecting. Borders are closed. Airports are currently shut down. People cannot afford to purchase food. People are suffering and on the verge of death.

We cannot wait until the dust settles—people are experiencing famine now. They simply don’t have time for us to wait.

Mission of Hope is responding to the need. Here’s how:

  • Pre-positioning food across the country for quicker distribution
  • Continuing food distribution at an increased level (6.7M meals since Jan. 1, 2024)
  • Training farmers in Haiti (4,500 since last summer)
  • Investing in farming communities by purchasing locally

We’re preparing to obtain food in Haiti through a $100K gift we received through an in-country partnership. While that investment is an incredible start, significantly more will be required in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

We are currently distributing the food we have to the areas of greatest need. Meanwhile, we are coordinating with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other organizations to request as much food as possible to disseminate across the country once ports are more freely operational and aid can be distributed on a larger scale.

Here's How You Can Help

  • Pray. First, and most importantly, join us in praying specifically for the safety of exiled families and for our team as they continue to risk their own lives to serve.
  • Give. Serving so many vulnerable people will be costly. If you feel compelled to join this expanding effort, you can do so here .
  • Share. It is alarming how little the world knows about this expanding crisis. We need more loud voices sharing the plight of Haitian families and inviting others to serve them. Share this information with friends and family and send it out through your social channels (you can share posts from ours, if you’d like).

Much is unknown about how this crisis and more will unfold in the coming days, but one thing that is clear is that people are suffering and on the verge of starvation. We are working, but we need your help to continue scaling our efforts.

We are deeply grateful for your partnership and your care for the people of Haiti. Please continue to pray for Haiti, to share her stories, and help us meet the vast and growing needs of her people. Now is the time.

Francenia’s Story: A Story of Resilience and Faith Imagine fleeing your home country—not because you wanted to, but because you felt that you had no choice. This was Francenia’s* reality three years ago. A mother from Cabaret, Haiti, Francenia made the heartbreaking decision to leave everything she knew behind. Her home. Her community. Her roots. Gang violence had made staying impossible. She crossed into the Dominican Republic, uncertain of what the future held, but determined to protect her family. Francenia’s story is one of resilience and faith. She recalls the days when her children attended school at the Mission of Hope campus in Titanyen, Haiti, and the times she found care and compassion at our clinic there, too. Those moments brought hope and stability during difficult times. Yet,

Neika's Story of Hope Neika, a student in one of the schools in our nutrition program, recently shared her story. "When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad left. My mom was always the one who took care of me. And then, in 2021, my mom died. I can still remember the day so clearly. I felt so hopeless when I lost my mom. I didn't know what would happen to me. My mom's cousin is a teacher, and she and her husband took me in to care for me. They put me in school. I thank God for them every day. Today, I am in the 6th grade! And I love school. Math is my favorite subject—it makes me feel smart when I can solve a problem. I also love getting to be with friends at school and eating lunch together. The food helps us focus, which is important—especially during exam time. One day, I dream of becomin
